Big Garden Bird Watch Takes Flight at Bel Royal School

We were delighted to celebrate the start of the Big Garden Bird Watch with a special whole-school assembly, sparking excitement and curiosity about the birds we share our environment with.

Every class took part in the event by creating their own bird feeders, which were then placed around the school grounds. Pupils spent time carefully observing the birds that visited, with particularly high levels of activity spotted along the nature trail.

Our Nursery children explored the topic through creativity and communication, painting pictures of magpies and learning new vocabulary linked to birds and their features.

Reception and Year 1 children worked together to create a fantastic bird-watching station outdoors using a range of den-making equipment. This provided a brilliant space for quiet observation and imaginative learning.

Across the school, children recorded their findings using tally charts and tens frames, helping them to document and compare the number of each bird species they spotted. Magpies and wood pigeons proved to be the most commonly seen visitors, and we were also lucky to spot lots of robins along the way.

It was a wonderful opportunity for hands-on learning, teamwork and developing a deeper appreciation for nature right on our doorstep.

Well done to all the children for their enthusiasm and brilliant observations!
